Florida's Legislature Divides the State's Electoral Votes
Florida's legislature believes it has reached an appropriate solution for the electoral deadlock: divide the Electoral College votes between the candidates picked by the voters.
Following the percentages of the state's voting public, the legislature divides the electors like this:
12 electors go to Bush, who won about 49% of the state's votes
12 electors go to Gore, who won about 49% of the state's votes
1 elector goes to Ralph Nader, who won about 2% of the state's votes
Although the electors were evenly split between Gore and Bush, the dozen that went to Gore were more than enough to bump him up and above the required 270 Electoral College votes.
Since the legislature manages to make this decision before the national December 12 deadline, the electors are ready in time for their big day.
