House of Representatives Finally Selects Gore
The pressure builds and builds, until 26 states finally turn in favor of Gore. The Senate, fulfilling its Twelfth Amendment obligation, picks a Vice President; the Senators elevate one of their own, Joseph Lieberman.
At noon on January 20, 2001, Vice President Al Gore becomes the 43rd President of the United States. Joseph Lieberman becomes the 46th Vice President (assuming he agrees to vacate his Senate seat).
The public outcry over the election of 2000 is so intense that there are immediate efforts to eliminate the Electoral College and replace it with the direct popular selection of the President.
