House of Representatives Finally Selects Bush

The pressure builds and builds, until 26 states finally turn in favor of Bush. The Senate, fulfilling its Twelfth Amendment obligation, picks a Vice President; the Senators select Bush's running mate, Dick Cheney.

At noon on January 20, 2001, Governor George W. Bush becomes the 43rd President of the United States. Richard Cheney becomes the 46th Vice President.

The public outcry over the election of 2000 is so intense that there are immediate efforts to get rid of the Electoral College. The debate over the future of America's electoral system consumes the attention of the public and Congress during much of the early months of the Bush Administration.
